Maths

The new Primary Maths Curriculum is designed to provide every child with a strong foundation in mathematical understanding, ensuring that they develop the skills, confidence, and curiosity to thrive in their mathematical journey.

The primary aim of the curriculum is to develop mathematical proficiency in all pupils. This proficiency includes not just the ability to perform calculations but also conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, strategic competence, adaptive reasoning, and a positive disposition toward mathematics. These five aspects work together to help students use mathematics effectively and confidently in real-life situations.

The curriculum is divided into five key strands:

  1. Number
  2. Algebra
  3. Measures
  4. Shape and Space
  5. Data and Chance

Each of these strands represents a different aspect of mathematical learning. Within each strand, pupils will engage in various activities that enhance their understanding of key mathematical concepts.

The curriculum also emphasizes four elements of mathematical learning:

  • Understanding and Connecting: Making connections between concepts and applying them in different contexts.
  • Communicating: Using language, symbols, and representations to express mathematical thinking.
  • Reasoning: Developing logical arguments and justifying solutions.
  • Problem-Solving: Applying knowledge creatively and efficiently to tackle mathematical problems.

Through engaging activities, collaborative learning, and real-world connections, the new curriculum aims to ensure that every child can build confidence and competence in mathematics. Our school is excited to embrace this updated approach and support our pupils in becoming confident and creative problem-solvers for the future.
